What do you think of when you think about history? For a lot of people, it's that boring class in high school that had some of the hardest tests (looking at you APUSH). But I believe history is something greater than just a boring thing you read about in class. History is what you make of it. History is anything and everything and history class in school only glide over the basics of what history is. So before I get into what I think history is I think we should discus what history can be. If you are in the camp that thinks history is boring I can tell you, you’re wrong. Do you enjoy video games? Well a lot of them are based on history (some much better than others.) What about movies? I know I enjoy movies! Well a lot of them are based on historical events and others are based on legends from history. In fact, nearly every story follows a similar path to a story wrote hundreds of years ago. Do you enjoy books, well it's the same thing as movies they are likely based on or are similar too old tales. Do you read/ enjoy the Bible….you get the point.
Now for me? For me History is a canvas, it's an outline to tell a story, through documentaries or fiction. History is a Hollywood action movie waiting to happen! I would love to see a good movie on the rise of the Ottomans in Europe or the warring states period of China. Documentaries can even be amazingly interesting to normal people (not history nerds) if the director presents it the right way. I guess the point I’m trying to get at in all of this is that history isn’t a series of dates and names. Its a series of stories from the first kingdoms to Rome to Hitler and the rise and fall of communism. Give history another chance if you wrote it off because of high school teachers who didn’t know how to make it interesting. Youtubers do a great job at making history more interesting(although many sacrifice accuracy to be more fun or tell an easier story) and if that isn’t your thing then just try a few movies like Zulu(old but good) Saving Private Ryan (although nearly entirely fiction is still a great starting point) or a tv show like HBO’s Rome. If nothing else has convinced you then I can tell you this, If you like Game of Thrones you’ll like history.
