Hello WPPB The Pulse listeners, This is Jackson Wise from the Hoodie Buddies writing, and today I’m going to get real. I love musicals, Grease, The Phantom Of the Opera, Sound of Music, and the handful of Disney musicals, but a sad fact about my love for musicals was very persistent, I had never watched The Hunchback of Notre Dame (HoND), that is until last night. I had been told that it was very similar to The Phantom Of the Opera so whilst procrastinating I decided that between an hour more of tedious AP Psych homework and watching a Disney version of The Phantom Of the Opera, my decision was pretty easy to make. I started watching HoND and was thrilled to be hit with the sounds of bells and that signature choir line, just for it to transform into the fun and playful song “The Bells of Notre Dame”. Being hooked in so early into the film might have skewed my opinion of the movie, but nonetheless, I watched on. Around the middle of HoND, I started to have a few problems with the film, my first being of the singer for the Quasimodo. Quasimodo is voiced by Tom Hulce, and while I have no problem with his voice, sometimes his sustains, like in “Out There”, have a certain vibrato that doesn’t jive with me. My second problem is that while I do love the songs in HoND, I feel like they use too much sing-song-speak, making a piece of music is great, singing every word is a bit excessive when you don’t have but a one or two, similar themes, to sing basic dialogue in, my point is, it gets old. Once I finished the film I realized how much work I had to do and got started, finishing around one in the morning, but the whole time I was singing songs from the soundtrack, my two favorite being “Hellfire” and “God Help the Outcasts”. Overall I would highly suggest this film to anyone who wants a dramatic and powerful musical, by Disney no less.
P.S The Gargoyles ruined the entire film, and their song was an absolute mess please give them no respect.
Sincerely, The Gargoyle Hater,
