Any fan of Smosh, Clevver and even The Warp Zone know what is going on with Defy Media and how they just shut down recently. This left the companies who depended on them looking for another home to thrive in. For those who have no idea what I am talking about, allow me to explain. Defy Media is an american digital media company that produced original online content for mainly YouTube. Defy Media had some of the largest digital brands like Smosh, Clevver and Awe.me, having earned more than 140 million online views. However recently, Defy Media has fallen onto hard times. It seems to be completely unclear on what caused them to shut their doors but a big thing people have been uncovering, this company had dealt with money issues. Back in June, Defy opted to close its programmatic business after failing to find a buyer which shows how bad the money issues really were. After closing its programmatic business, the company hoped to pivot its attention toward its digital creation business but obviously that move never panned out how they hoped it would.
The overall result of their money problems is that Monday the 5th, Defy Media laid off its entire staff and said it would cease all operations, leaving many of its brands without a home. Currently many of the striving brands like Smosh and Clevver are desperately looking for a new home so they don’t have to stop their brands completely.
Honestly, I wish the very best for every person involved in this terrible situation and hope that the brands find their rightful home that treats them way better than Defy ever did.
